This book (just about) held my attention until page 104 when it turned into Alice Through the Looking Glass. (Spoiler) The stupid notion that refugees could pass through a door and crawl along a tunnel to anywhere in Europe was not only ridiculous but insulting to all those who have genuinely risked their lives to find safety and freedom. The premise that when Europe became saturated with refugees the 'nativists' were prepared to move out to other parts of the globe was equally facile. The style of writing was annoying with convoluted sentences the length of paragraphs and a biblical turn of phrase presumably intended to convey gravitas. The characters quickly lost their initial quirkiness, the Look Inside extract is the best part of the book, and became one dimensional. A book of two halves, neither of them good.
Refugees do not migrate from one country/continent to another so easily & whenever they want. I am yet to meet a refugee who flees his hometown, lives in tents but has enough money to buy whatever he likes. It would have been nice if the author had given it more realistic touch than simply project them as a mod who invade empty houses in other countries.
Not sure why this book received such aclaim. I thought it was horrible. Up until chapter 6 it was decent, but then it goes all twilight zone with people traveling through doors. Wish I could get back the 2 nights it took me to read it.
I just couldn’t get into this story. For a long time it felt like a never ending introduction and then I just stopped liking the characters. And all of the little sidebars about unarmed people who were in no way part of the plot were just confusing.
Read this for book club. I would not have finished it otherwise. Can not understand all the hype and awards for this book. The writing style is strange and disjointed with run on sentences. No real story line that makes any sense for the two main characters and then suddenly the author throws in a brief character here and there that has no connection to anything. It's like the author had momentary hallucinations while typing this novel and then went OOPS......where was I again??? If anyone suggests this book Just Say NO!!
I think I liked the writing style at first because it’s very different but by the middle of the book I just wanted it to end. At the end I wondered if I felt sad but then realized I felt nothing and I believe after reading an entire book one should feel something!
This was purchased for a school reading group, and the group had to discontinue reading as the content made the girls very uncomfortable. Lots of sex, drugs, talk of getting high, and material that made these eighth grade girls very uncomfortable.
